Chicago Contractor Initiative: A Research Study

Repot cover for Chicago Small Contractors Initiative

As Chicago and cities across the nation are blossoming from a downtown building boom, how can small construction contractor businesses working on residential homes and commercial storefronts in local neighborhoods take advantage of this newfound growth?

In order to drive local wealth creation through small business support, CRF and its stakeholders have created a report on the landscape of opportunities and challenges faced by small contractors in Chicago.

Read this landscape scan and determine how you can best serve Chicago’s diverse construction contracting businesses.

The Small Contractors Initiative Report

CRF originally convened a group of stakeholders in 2017 to explore the decades-long challenges facing small contractors in Chicago, with the goal of developing an initiative to help grow opportunities for this critical group of small business owners. Acknowledging that a variety of activities were underway in the marketplace, the landscape scan was designed and conducted in 2018-2019 with support from the JPMorgan Chase Foundation and other funders.

The report addresses:

  • Opportunity landscape for small contractors
  • Access to capital
  • Training and coaching
  • Complementary initiatives
  • Local market gaps
  • National models
