Story Overview

Communities where people struggle with poverty, isolation or disenfranchisement have a critical need for mental health services, and one community resource in the Twin Cities is scaling up to meet a growing need for outpatient counseling.

With three locations throughout the region, Arubah Emotional Health Services provides outpatient mental health counseling to people living and working in low-income neighborhoods. Patients come to Arubah for cognitive behavioral therapy as well as evidence-based therapies such as art, yoga and hypnotherapy.

When Arubah needed a small business loan to purchase a new location in North Minneapolis that would serve as a fourth service location as well as a business headquarters, founder and owner Anissa Keyes turned to CRF.

Working with the City of Minneapolis Community Planning and Development Department (CPED), Keyes was able to obtain a $211,000 SBA 7(a) small business loan for building acquisition, working capital, fixtures, furniture and equipment, and building improvements.

With the financing secured, Arubah Emotional Health Services is now hard at work preparing the property to open as its headquarters and its fourth outpatient clinic in 2018. Arubah plans to expand its services at the new clinic, which includes residential units that can be leased for additional income.

Our communities have traditionally been underserved by mental health professionals, and this project is a huge step toward fulfilling our mission of enabling, empowering and helping facilitate personal restoration, particularly for people of color. Having a resource like CRF and its partners on our side has made an enormous difference in our success.
